Game Recap

Panthers fall in shootout 44-41

The Batesburg-Leesville Panthers jumped out to a 21-0 first quarter lead but Barnwell rallied and won 44-41 at B-L. B-L led 34-20 at the half but the Warhorses returned a fumble for a touchdown and used two short fields for touchdowns as they claimed the big Region 5-AA contest to improve to 7-0, 2-0 while B-L fell to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in Region 5-AA play. The Panthers host Bamberg-Ehrhardt next week.

B-L took the opening possession and marched down the field with Bishop Cannon connecting with Pat Burgess for a 44 yard touchdown to go up 6-0. B-L would recover the ensuing pooch kick and drive 44 yards in five plays with Cannon scoring on an eight yard run. After Barnwell went three and out B-L went 65 yards in two plays with Jalik Oakman scoring on a 28 yard run to give B-L the 21-0 lead with 5:34 to play in the first quarter. The two teams then traded touchdowns with B-L holding a 34-13 lead late in the first quarter before Barnwell scored on a four yard pass with :08 to play in the first half to make it 34-20 at the break.

Early in the third quarter the B-L defense forced a punt but on the first offensive play the Panthers fumbled and the Warhorses returned it for an eight yard touchdown to cut the Panther lead to 34-27. In the final minute of the third quarter the Panthers lined up to punt out of their own end zone and the snap sailed high and resulted in a safety to cut the lead to 34-29. The Warhorses would then get a short field after the free kick and on the first play Mykal Lee scored on a 52 yard run to give the Warhorses a 37-34 lead after the two point conversion with :23 to play in the third quarter.

B-L would then move the ball into Warhorse territory on their next possession but turned the ball over on downs after a sack on fourth down. The Warhorses then drove down the field and on scored on a 16 yard run to make it 44-34. B-L would answer with an 80 yard drive which resulted in a five yard run by Keshoun Williams. The kick made it 44-41 but the Warhorses recovered the onside kick and essentially ran out the clock as B-L only had time for a hook and lateral play on the final snap as the Warhorses claimed a huge win.

B-L tallied 533 yards of offense in the loss while Barnwell finished with 325. Cannon had a splendid night passing as he was 18 of 25 for 284 yards with two touchdowns. Tay Wilson finished the night with a career high 175 yards on 18 carries. Burgess finished with a career high 111 yards on five receptions. Lee finished with 196 yards rushing on 25 carries for the Warhorses.
